Staying fit is an essential part of living a healthy life, but it can be hard to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a busy schedule. Office culture often revolves around sitting for long parts of the day, which can result in drastic, negative consequences. Not everyone has time to go to the gym everyday after work or during the day, but there are a few easy steps you can take to maintain your physical health. By making a few simple lifestyle changes, you can incorporate some exercise hacks in your day that will leave you feeling healthy and happy.

Get More Steps In

One easy way to work healthy habits into your day is to emphasize and expand on the daily activities you already do, like walking. For example, when you go to the grocery store, park at the back of the parking lot so that you are forced to walk a few extra steps. If you can avoid driving altogether and bike or walk somewhere, do it. Focus on keeping a fast pace wherever you walk so you can burn a few extra calories and get your heart pumping a little faster.

If you have a dog, take them on a longer walk than you usually do. If you don’t already take them on longer walks, then work on taking them out every single day. If you have kids, take them to the park a couple times a week, and make an effort not to sit on a bench while they play. Get involved. If they are swinging, you can also swing. If they are playing tag, you can play tag with them. This might only be realistic during the weekends, but you should try to make up for any stagnant days you have during the week.

While you are at work, focus on getting up and out of your seat as often as you can. Take the longer route to get coffee or water. Pour yourself small cups of what you are drinking so that you are forced to get up more often for refills. If it’s possible, take a walk when you have breaks. You can also try a few stretches, light exercises, and even yoga if you can find a space where you have enough room. Not only will this help improve your health, but it will give you an energy boost at work and increase your focus.

Get Fit with Friends

Being active with friends is not only good for your physical being, but also improves your quality of life. Some of the benefits include lowered stress, decreased chances of depression, and lengthened life expectancy. Additionally, when you work out with others you can keep each other accountable and make sure you work out when you need to. Plus, exercising with others creates a competitive atmosphere that helps you push your workouts harder.

After a long day of taking care of the kids or going to work, going to the gym might seem like torture — especially when your comfy bed is waiting for you at home. However, if you make plans with your friends, roommates, or family to get a bit of exercise in, you are far more likely to do it. You can invite them to the gym, to the park, or for a walk/run around the neighborhood.

Of course, you can always go for a different experience. You can find a class that you want to take, play a game of soccer, football, or any other sport. You don’t need to go to the gym and lift weights, you don’t even need to go on a run; whatever gets you out of your chair and working your cardio, you should do it. You can even try more unique activities and create new hobbies, like metal detecting to not only get you walking and digging around, but also to provide you with entertainment and maybe even a bit of extra cash.

Learn Self-Defense

You can also make your workouts practical by learning how to defend yourself. You can take classes that will not only help you feel safer and teach you self-defense mechanisms, but usually include body strengthening and cardio into their workouts. In this way, you feel more in control of your life and more in control of your health.

Depending on your interests, there are a variety of different self-defense classes you can choose from: you can take general self-defense classes, or you can take a specialized class, like karate, taekwondo, kickboxing, or Krav Maga. Each of these have different skill sets and advantages to offer. This type of class will help you get fit and help you feel more confident and empowered in your daily life.

Make sure you also accompany fitness with better eating habits and drink as much water as you can. Work on cutting out foods that you know are unhealthy for you and have excessive amounts of sugar, fats, or carbs. With a bit of conscious thought, you can incorporate functional fitness into your busy life and be on your way to a healthier you!
