Dermocosmetics – The Harbinger of Prosperity for the Beauty Industry

Over the past few years, the focus of consumers shifted from the realm of aesthetic beauty to the broader concept of skin and hair health. Wellness, which more and more consumers are now looking for in every aspect of life such as nutrition, physique and lifestyle, is influencing the demand for dermocosmetics.

Moreover, growing consumers’ concern regarding their appearance, rise in disposable income, busy lifestyle of consumers, and a shift toward online shopping contribute to the demand for these therapeutic-positioned products. Furthermore, sun, pollution, stress, and unhealthy eating promote various skin breakdown issues that drive the demand for dermacosmetics.

So What Are Dermocosmetics?

Well, they are products that enhance the health and beauty of skin and hair by combining the characteristics of cosmetics and that of dermatological products. These advanced therapeutic products are designed for sensitive skin and provide relief or healing of certain skin and scalp conditions including acne, eczema, hair loss, blemishes.

They also offer protection against natural skin aging, skin dehydration, as well as improve the health and appearance of skin and scalp.

Dermocosmetics have witnessed notable growth in recent years, owing to the augmenting demand for the products. According to a recent report by the research firm Allied Market Research, the global dermocosmetics market is set to achieve a CAGR of 11.1% during the forecast period, 2022 to 2030.

In response to the growing demand for dermocosmetics, various major cosmetic and pharmaceutical companies are making significant investments for the development of advanced and innovative skincare solutions and launching new products.

They are also collaborating on various R&D activities to enhance the existing products.

In March 2022, German multinational chemical company BASF SE partnered with Caregen Co., Ltd., a company that specializes in biomimetic peptide synthesis to introduce a Pepto Vitae range for dermocosmetic products in Asia.

The Peptovitae range comprises four patented biomimetic peptides which have been scientifically developed and addresses various types of skin issues.

The range includes Pepto Vitae Matrix, which addresses aging symptoms, Pepto Vitae Bright, which improves skin brightness, Pepto Vitae Derma, which soothes dry and itchy skin and Pepto Vitae Clear, which calms and moisturizes the skin. Again in March same year, Amazon Silk launched the Incanta facial care product in Canada at Amazon.ca and in the U.S at Amazon.com.

Incanta has been scientifically developed using a nut called Super Sacha Inchi (Plukenetia Huayllabambana) and other skincare ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, peptides, niacinamide, vitamins C, and E to offer a youthful, revitalized and rejuvenated skin while reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

In February 2022, Merck KGaA, a leading science and technology company, unveiled two new cosmetic ingredients – RonaCare Baobab and RonaCare Hibiscus, which are born out of nutrient-rich superfoods, such as the baobab fruit and the hibiscus flower.

The ingredients are sourced through means of sustainability, and can be used for a wide range of skin care and dermocosmetics products. RonaCare Baobab efficiently protects the skin matrix components and alleviates skin irritation. RonaCare Hibiscus offers additional care to sensitive skin, provides protection against oxidative stress, protects collagens from degradation, enhances the vitality of skin cells, and reduces skin irritation.

The dermocosmetics industry has also been showing active mergers and acquisitions between companies over the years. For instance, in July 2022, Waldencast plc, multi-brand beauty and wellness platform closed its acquisition of Obagi Global Holdings Limited and Milk Makeup. Obagi is an advanced skin care brand in the dermo-cosmetic space while Milk Makeup is a leading brand in clean beauty.

With the acquisition, Waldencast aims to establish a best-in-class multi-brand beauty and wellness platform by developing and speeding up the next generation of fast growing brands that can leverage the strong product development capabilities of the platform.

Evonik, a German specialty chemicals company completed the acquisition of innovativeHealth Group (innoHealth), in March 2020 to expand its sphere in novel dermocosmetic products.

The deal allows Evonik to widen their lab capabilities and enhance their screening abilities for the product development for unique active ingredients.

It’s clear that there’s a great opportunity for dermacosmetics to grow and achieve success in the coming years, given the various benefits the products offer and a huge response seen for these products from the skincare and haircare industry.

The players in the dermacosmetics space are formulating products focused on specific skin issues rather than regular beauty concerns and this trend is expected to continue in the years to come.
