Correcting Some Misconceptions About Vertigo

Vertigo is a kind of imbalance that varies from light spinning to mild unsteadiness on movement. 15% of people experience dizziness and vertigo every year. This problem is experienced due to inner ear issues. However, sometimes this could be due to other body problems. A symptom like dizziness can usually increase with age and these effects are noticed in high numbers in women.

An increase in vertigo problems can ruin your daily activities and might also increase your psychological and emotional stress. Sometimes people also tend to lose multitasking ability. Further on the patient will also end up suffering from anxiety and depression problems. 

The internet has ample information regarding vertigo. But unfortunately, some of them are misconceptions.


Following are some Misconceptions:


Misconception 1.
Vertigo means acrophobia or fear of heights: People have a misconception that vertigo is nothing but a fear of height which is also termed acrophobia. However, the fact is vertigo can be experienced when you’re at heights but that doesn’t mean that having acrophobia is the same as having vertigo. Vertigo can be experienced by anybody, anywhere, and anytime.


Misconception 2.
Vertigo is a disease: Vertigo is just a symptom of fever or some other existing problems. Vertigo problems are due to nervous system problems or hypotension or due to diabetes, anemia, and other medical conditions which could cause balance disorders. 


Misconception 3.
Vertigo is similar to lightheadedness: Lightheadedness is not similar to vertigo. Vertigo is a bit different than this. Vertigo is the false alarm of movement. However, the case of lightheadedness is a kind of feeling where a person is about to faint or pass out.


Misconception 4.
Vertigo cannot be cured: This is another misunderstanding where people think that vertigo is an incurable disease and once it is experienced it remains throughout their lifetime. But, this is just a misunderstanding. For some people, vertigo is experienced once and might never experience it again. However, for some people, this could be like chronic pain.


Misconception 5.
Vertigo becomes better if you standstill: This logic might work once but not every time. If a person is suffering from a disease like nausea, this could get even worse even after you standstill. Neglecting the issue can also lead to vomiting.


Misconception 6.
Vertigo Subsidies On Its Own: Vertigo does not cure on its own. It is cured only when a vertigo patient takes care of restlessness, stress, medication, etc. But if the cause is severe, you must immediately take medical help and treat your vertigo soon.


Misconception 7.
Vertigo means Labyrinthitis: Labyrinthitis is one of the causes of vertigo where dizziness and hearing loss are seen.


Misconception 8.
Vertigo is common in old age:  Vertigo can be experienced at any age by anybody. However, in the case of elders, the risk of falls is higher. So treating the balance problems is for older people.


Misconception 9.
Vertigo Cannot Kill you:  Every year millions of falls are seen through vertigo.  People who suffer from vertigo die due to their injuries. Vertigo could also be a symptom of cardiac disease. 


Misconception 10.
Vertigo does not affect hearing:  Vertigo is experienced due to the disturbance in the inner ear. This affects a person’s hearing ability.
