What Effect Does Music Have on Exercise?

Many of us choose to don our headphones before starting a workout, but have you ever wondered why this is? Whether it is going for a run, lifting weights or indulging in a yoga session, music can be a great motivator.

Each of us may have a preference for the type of music that we listen to when we are exercising and there may be good reason behind this. You may opt for softer, slower music when doing your daily yoga routine, but choose a faster paced, more rhythmic piece for a more high intensity workout.

Some people may even choose to start of with a more gentle style of music and work up to the more up tempo beats later on during the workout.

But whatever style or pace of music you choose, there is a science behind why we find music the perfect partner for our fitness routines.

Research was done into the effects of music on the brain whilst taking part in exercise. The results were conclusive that when individuals listened to music as part of their workout routine, there was an increase in the subjects mental arousal. In other words, the brain reacts to the music, causing the person to become more geared up to workout.

Further findings from the research showed that the brain is programmed to react to music, similar to tapping your feet when you hear a catchy tune or bobbing your head along with your favourite song.

This then causes the body to relax and therefore be much more easily able to perform a more effective exercise routine. This means that you will feel much more motivated when doing your workout.

So next time you reach for the play button before starting your exercise routine, you will be safe in the knowledge that the music is pushing you on!
