Yoga & Autism

3 Ways YOGA helps those living with Autism

Living with Autism is not easy. It is usually classified as a broad range of conditions that is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and even non-verbal communication. Having Autism can at times be stressful for both the individual with the condition and the caretaker.

For some time now, therapists have been seeking ways to make the life of the person with autism a bit more manageable. After YOGA was introduced to some persons living with Autism, it seemed to have helped immensely.

Ways YOGA Helps:

Relaxation

YOGA puts the brain at peace, and this is something that is a tremendous help to someone living with Autism.

As the brain becomes more at peace, relaxation becomes easier, which is of key importance for them. This relaxation carries over for them, past the YOGA mats, and into their bedtime – Making it easier for them to fall asleep, and stay asleep, through the night.

Focusing Attention

As they’re actively involved in YOGA, it plays a big part in their day to day activities. It does this by first, increasing their posture, and spine strength, and then by increasing their motor functions. This increase in motor functions, expands to their awareness and abilities to focus, and even pay attention.

With this ability to have more focus, and attention, the person with Autism gains better communication and comprehension skills, which in turn helps them improve their speaking patterns.

Confidence

The more that those living with Autism, have performed YOGA, the more, their treating therapists, have noticed that these abilities are increasing. As these different abilities increase, it begins to improve confidence, as well as self-esteem. This improvement in self-esteem, greatly improves self-value, and ability to function productively in society.

YOGA improves an Autistic person’s life significantly and in different ways. One of the main reasons that it has been accepted, is because those living with Autism crave structure. YOGA supplies that structure. It is also likely that the more YOGA is performed, the more rapidly persons with Autism begin to grow in the different areas mentioned above.

One of the amazing things about YOGA, is that one does not need to be in any particular shape, in order to try it out. It is a great avenue for people living with Autism. Anyone of any shape, size, or age, can still perform the exercise. This is good for them, because this means that, at any age (especially for those parents living with children who have Autism), it can improve their back strength.

This in turn, improves their posture, their awareness and focus, their motor skills, as well as their confidence. This can all lead to overall a general improvement in a higher quality of life.
