Lagree vs. Weight Lifting

What is Lagree Fitness?

Lagree Fitness was created by mastermind Sebastien Lagree. He designed this method to incorporate all 5 major elements of physical fitness: Endurance, Cardio, Body composition, Flexibility, and Strength.

This Lagree Method takes place on a one-of-a-kind machine known as  ‘The Megaformer’. It has springs that control tension, a moveable carriage, hanging straps, and pulleys that allow for a variety of moves incorporating balance and strength. Similar to other weight training methods, the Lagree method aims at focusing on slow-twitch muscles. You might be thinking “What in the world is that?!” – We got you.

Slow Twitch muscles are responsible for more endurance based movements that aim to get your muscles shaking through various holds and longer time under tension all within a full-body workout. A typical Lagree class contains blocks of work that target each area of your body and then place intense focus on the muscle groups within those areas.

For example; You’ll begin with a Core block of work that aims to fire up your entire body while waking up your intrinsic core stabilizing muscles through various plank-based exercises. You would then move on to a Lower Body block that focuses on unilateral and bilateral exercises through various slow 4-count movements, holds and pulses. This would be followed up by your Upper body, Obliques and Core finisher blocks.

Lagree classes can range from 40-55 minutes depending on the studio and within that time you are guaranteed to feel the shakes in areas you’ve never experienced! Consider it a wake-up call for your muscles.

What is Weight Lifting?

Weight training is one of the most popular forms of exercise that aims to develop the strength and size of skeletal muscle groups. Common equipment such as weight stacks, bars, and dumbbells that utilize gravity are used to oppose the muscular force generated by the eccentric and concentric contraction.

There are many forms of weight lifting/strength training which can also vary between sets, tempos and reps – these  are all dependent on the overall goal of the client.

Why is Lagree So Popular?

Unlike traditional forms of strength training exercises like weight lifting and cross-body, Lagree fitness aims to build lean muscle mass through low-impact movements. It achieves this by improving stamina and the oxygen capacity of your muscles.

Like weightlifting, Lagree allows your body to continue burning calories throughout the day long after your class has ended. Yep. You read that correctly – who doesn’t want that?! 40-55 minutes of work and a burn that can last for hours after? *Pinch me*.

What to expect in a Lagree class? Cue the shakes. The workout makes your muscles quiver and heart rate go up from start to finish. You can also expect each class to be customized to the needs of individuals based on experience and injury history. The pace of the class is slow and controlled but the 40-55 minute sessions fly by with exercises that not only challenge your body but your mental strength as well.

Be prepared to get your muscles working through their full range of motion while reaching muscle failure in a short amount of time.

5 Ways Lagree is Different From Weightlifting

Benefits of Lagree

  • It Gives a full-body Workout – Health and fitness experts are becoming increasingly aware of the fact that full-body workouts are way more effective for overall health and fitness than standalone exercises. This pilates-inspired workout does just that. It uses Megaformer to target the entire body so that no muscle group is left out. In the long-term, your entire body feels stronger overall.
  • Lagree is Suitable for All Ages – By the time you’ve reached mid-40s or 50s, overuse, injuries and joint pain are just a few of the reasons someone may be seeking workouts that are lower-impact. Many still crave that high-energy feeling but just can’t bear the impact of a more intense strength workout. The Megaformer allows for a low-impact, effective workout. Adjusting spring loads and taking modifications for certain exercises allow each individual to get a workout that is tailored to their needs and level of fitness.
  • Offers a Balanced Workout – Lagree doesn’t prioritize one aspect of exercise over another. It incorporates every aspect of exercising such as muscular strength and endurance, body composition, cardiorespiratory endurance, and flexibility. Conventional workouts may encourage you to ‘balance things out’ by targeting the opposite group of muscles the next day. With Lagree, you get a complete and comprehensive workout every time you take class.
  • Great for All Body types – The possibilities of customization on the Megaformer are endless. When you get on the machine, you are in control of the spring load tension so you can modify it to your level.
  • Puts Major Emphasis on Your Form – This pilates-style workout gives special attention to maintaining the correct form throughout the workout. In this way, you gain better control over your body movements and range of motion. It’s not uncommon to pick up bad form practices with conventional workouts leading to muscle gains that you were never aiming for. Even slight variation from an ideal movement could disrupt the desired results. On the Megaformer, form is everything.

The Lagree Method continues to make a bold statement in the fitness community. With studios all over the world, people can’t stop talking about this life-changing method that is popping up in cities all over.
