Article by: Harshada Dive
When the sun rises and the world wakes up, many people around the world begin their day with a ritual that goes beyond exercising- yoga. The yoga mat is an essential tool in this ancient practice that balances the mind, body, and spirit. These yoga mats offer improved grip, longevity, and comfort, which is best for people who are new to yoga, as well as those who have been practicing for a long time. These mats include biodegradable materials, antibacterial properties, and customization options that satisfy the various needs of yoga lovers.
Recent innovations in the yoga mat enterprise have enhanced the general experience of yoga and promoted sustainability & well-being. Look at the evolution of yoga with modern mats that combine practicality and fashion seamlessly. According to a recent report published by Allied Market Research the global yoga mat industry is predicted to showcase a considerable CAGR of 7.1% during the forecast timeframe.
A rise in obesity rates and an increasing focus on health among consumers
The growth in obesity and the rise in health awareness among consumers have increased interest in physical activities such as yoga. As more people realize the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, they lean towards activities like yoga to enhance their typical well-being.
This change in consumer behavior has had a direct impact on the demand for yoga mats, which are necessary for comfortable and secure yoga practice. For example, folks who want to lose weight and improve their fitness levels are more inclined to buy a high-quality yoga mat to help them in their wellness journey. This case shows how an increase in obesity and health consciousness influences the expansion of the yoga mat industry.
Furthermore, many governments around the world encourage manufacturers to invest in environmentally friendly materials for yoga mats. To comply with strict government regulations, yoga mat manufacturers are changing their focus from PVC materials to eco-friendly options such as cotton and jute. Manufacturers such as Manduka, prAna, Tomuno, and Jade Yoga prioritize materials with low carbon emissions during production.
For example, Dragonfly Yoga and other leading companies are shifting their focus to the development of lightweight and biodegradable yoga mats that are eco-friendly solutions. Six young girls from Assam have developed a biodegradable yoga mat, which could help protect lakes from the threat of water hyacinth- Six young girls from a fishing village in Assam have transformed a pesky water plant into a valuable resource by creating a biodegradable and compostable yoga mat from water hyacinth.
They live near Lake Deepor Beel, and their families depend on it to survive, but the excessive growth of the water hyacinth is a problem. With the support of the North-East Centre for Technology Application and Reach (NECTAR), a group called Simang has developed the Moorhen Yoga Mat. This hand-woven mat made from water hyacinth serves both environmental and social purposes by involving the local community. A biodegradable and compostable mat enhances the aquatic ecosystem by removing water hyacinths.
Innovation & Use Of Technology
The use of technology, such as solar dryers, accelerates the drying process and improves productivity. A total of 38 women from three villages participated in this project, providing them with livelihood opportunities. The ‘7WEAVES’ team, part of the Simang collective, has contributed expertise in natural dyeing using indigenous materials such as lac, onion skin, iron, and jaggery. The resulting “Moorhen Yoga Mat” named after a resident bird of the Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary is packaged in a cotton canvas bag designed for biodegradation.
This innovative product is expected to enter the global market as a sustainable solution that transforms a regional problem into a useful resource. Key developments by frontrunners – Lululemon Athletica Inc., Eupromed, Alo Yoga, Inc., Jade Yoga, and Hugger Mugger are focusing on different strategies such as new product launches, partnerships, investment in initiatives, and joint ventures to reinforce their presence in the global industry.
In December 2020, Thrasio procured Maximo Fitness, a consumer product company. Maximo Fitness is based in the U.K. and is a manufacturer and supplier of gym products such as yoga mats. This acquisition is part of Thrasio’s strategy to increase the range of products available in the United Kingdom market.
