Try A Little Turmeric

Whenever we want to take control of our health and give ourselves a boost it’s easy to become overwhelmed with all the tips and tricks’ people have to offer. And with so much information out there, and many of it untrustworthy unfortunately, how are we supposed to know what’s actually going to be beneficial to our health?

Luckily, we don’t always have to venture into a world of crazy supplements and concoctions to better our health, we can find it as close as our very own kitchen.

Turmeric has long been used for its flavour enhancement to some of our favourite meals, more notably Indian dishes, and is responsible for that glowing, beautiful yellow color we see in curry powders. It is related to the ginger family, and has been recognized for its medicinal purposes going back thousands of years.

Did you know, turmeric is known for delaying the effects of Alzheimer’s and has even been found to prevent heart disease?

The key to this lies in the active compound curcumin, which is found in turmeric. Curcumin is a very strong antioxidant and has anti-inflammatory qualities, this means it can benefit a whole host of different health issues from bowel problems, joint pain, to asthma, all the way up to cancer.

We spend so much money every year on health supplements and memberships, and while these are of great benefit to us, we tend to overlook the smaller changes or additions we can make daily to help ourselves on the inside. Turmeric is found in a lot of health products already, as it is now widely being recognised for its uses.

This means it is important to check before you start adding spoonful’s to your meals as just like with all things you don’t want to overdo it.

A good guide to use is between one and two teaspoons a day.

It’s so easy to add a couple of spoons of turmeric to your coffee, protein shake, oats or veggies. You can find plenty of recipes for omelettes, frittatas and rice dishes that taste amazing with turmeric, and if you like a crack of black pepper on your meals all the better as it has been shown to be a super powerful combination especially if you suffer with arthritis, and can even aid with the absorption of the spice.

If you really aren’t into your herbs or spices you can find curcumin supplements at any of your local health stores. But come on, who doesn’t love a good curry?
